Switch Brains Like a Boss
Have you ever found yourself physically at home, but still mentally at work?
It's not that hard to exit the building, especially if you've had a long day. But if you're not careful, you can leave your brain in work mode.
Which means it's still going to be processing that kid that won't stop licking the whiteboard - one teacher's true story (mine). Or that vaguely threatening email from a client who just loves to sign off with the old ’Warm regards’.
Here's where a cognitive transition ritual can come in really handy. A small, deliberate action that will tell your nervous system: The work day is done - stand down.
This could be as simple as changing your clothes the moment you get home, saying 'Work Hat Off' out loud just as you close your laptop, or even playing a leaving work playlist in the car on the way home.
Without a mental boundary, your brain can stay in low-level alert all night, which means you're not actually resting even though your head has hit the pillow.
Say to yourself, I can't rest if my brain still thinks I'm on duty. Give yourself permission to mentally clock out. No guilt, because that, my friend, is working well by being kind to your mind!
