You Get to Choose
A while ago we had some very challenging financial news that resulted in a massive anxiety spike for me as we worked through what to do next. In the meantime, I took the only action I knew how and changed the information that was coming into my world.
Gone were the lifestyle influencers with the fancy houses and tropical travel destinations, and instead I found inspiration in those with tiny homes, simple living and maximising their resources. I researched ‘Places in NZ that look like they are overseas’ and ‘How to live well on a budget’ and saw the joy of taking the challenge to live with less. I subscribed to newsletters that encouraged less spending and more creativity, and it really helped with the process of lowering the overwhelm in my So-Bob brain so I could do better problem-solving.
Fortunately we didn’t have to go and live in a yurt (although to be honest, I can actually see the attraction) and nowadays I do get to travel to many tropical destinations as a Keynote Speaker, but I’ll never forget the power I felt in choosing my input.
In a world of information overload, it can seem like we have no choice in what comes into our eyes, ears and brains every day. Here’s your reminder, that ultimately YOU get to choose.
You choose your newsfeed: The block, delete and mute options are there for a reason. Deciding that somebody’s voice is causing you stress means you can take action and ‘lower their volume’.
You choose your soundtrack: If the noise of the mall is overwhelming, put your headphones on and decide what you want to hear that will calm your mind and settle your body.
You choose your focus: What you put your attention on will inevitably affect your mood, so highlighting beauty, kindness and joy will help give you a dopamine boost whenever it passes you by.
Be Kind to Your Mind by taking action where and when you can!
