Ever had a meltdown? I have!
Have you ever had a meltdown that seemed right out of proportion to the situation at hand? This might be a bit embarrassing to admit, but I had one in Belgium!
Here’s me, just before arrival in Brügges, only to discover that the gorgeous little place right on the canal I’d set my heart on, I’d in fact booked with a non-refundable payment for the following night instead of the night we arrived!
And unlike the ‘packing two left boots’ debacle (see above for previous foolishness lol), this time I just couldn’t seem to laugh it off. Quite the opposite in fact - I burst into tears on the spot.
Everyone was being so nice while I had my moment. The hotel lady brought me tissues, Mykle sorted out alternative arrangements and it all worked out in the end.
But as I trundled along the cobbled streets with a sniffly nose and panda eyes from mascara running, I asked myself a reflective question: What is this REALLY about?
Because let’s face it, it’s never really about what’s happening in the moment.
It’s harder to handle problems…
When you’re balancing a lot.
When you’re tired.
When you’re working to a budget.
When it’s embarrassing.
When other people are relying on you.
When you’ve worked really hard to get it right, and still got it wrong.
And in my case it was probably a combination of the above.
There’s no magic answer to this reflective question, but acknowledging that there are reasons behind our reactions can be a great step in helping us Be Kind to Our Minds.
Huge thanks to my patient husband, a generous hotel (who refunded even though they didn’t have to) and all the locals who saw me crying and didn’t point and laugh - lol!
Where did you have a meltdown?
